photography

Elad Lassry is one the nominees for this year's deutsche borse photography award. This was the only i wasn't familiar with so i google his name to check his work. Must confess it didn't touch me that much, still i've found a couple of interesting pictures from his gallery website. This one is one of them, curiously enough, not the best image if you wanna represent a bit of his work.

The secret of the grain, movie by Abdellatif Kechiche.
Saw it for the first time yesterday and i truly recommend it. Not coming from a cinema backgrounded i found really interesting the way he introduces the movie to the spectator. It's done in a very simple way but very efficient one, without loosing it's beauty - it's simplicity actually enhances it.

First you follow the main carather in his work, then with some fisherman friends, then he visits his wife, one of his daughters, then finally he heads home where he meets his girl. In all these stops his talks with all this caracthers gives you so much information that after 25 minutes you feel you know the story's background. Then, the movie starts...

Yorgos Lanthimos is a young film director from Greece. Couple of weeks ago i saw Dogtooth, his movie that won several international awards. I've found the movie very interesting and i tried to find more about him. He has a website that i recommend - besides Dogtooth of course, specially some of the commercials like Aegean Airlines and Free.

------------------------------------------------

Documentary

It's not my favourite photographer but i do like this documentary. It reminds me of a certain idea of Portugal I have in mind, and I'm almost sure most of us portuguese have it too. All the other 5 parts can be easily found on youtube.

----------

Julian Schnabel has a exhibition in Toronto. Even-though he is not an artist that i follow that much, i must confess his paintings of big waves touched me and made me fly to Toronto. Unfortunately there isn't much information about them on the net.

---------------

music

I'm a deeply sorry but it took me a bit longer than August to start posting here. I'll try to correct that. And I would like to start by talking about Nina Nastasia. I saw her for the first time a week ago here in Lisbon. I truly recommend watching her live. In between, there's 4 records available.

Mobile Home has brought me some art discoveries. One of the most interesting ones is this video from polish artist Zbig Rybczynski made in 1980. "Thirty-six characters from different stages of life - representations of different times - interact in one room, moving in loops, observed by a static camera. I had to draw and paint about 16.000 cell-mattes, and make several hundred thousand exposures on an optical printer. It took a full seven months, sixteen hours per day, to make the piece. The miracle is that the negative got through the process with only minor damage, and I made less than one hundred mathematical mistakes out of several hundred thousand possibilities. In the final result, there are plenty of flaws ® black lines are visible around humans, jitters caused by the instability of film material resulting from film perforation and elasticity of celluloid, changes of colour caused by the fluctuation in colour temperature of the projector bulb and, inevitably, dirt, grain and scratches.”

cinema

These are 2 movies i have seen last week. You can recognize where Hurt Locker
comes from. There's Hollywood in every single shot which obvious deslikes me.
But the movie also assumes war, from a soldier point of view, as a game and
specially as an addition. I'm not a war movie buff or anything but i think this might
be the first time war is showed like this. I liked that, it made me think.

The music room is in a all different league. It was my first Satyajit Ray's movie ever,
himself Kurosawa's "buddy". He's considered the best Indian movie maker. The mo-
vie is, in fact, very beautiful and poetic and it was clear to me it touched deep Indian
society issues. There is obvious much much more to say about this movie, which i
totally recommend.

to start with...

photo @ Susanna ray (susannahray.com), from The Right Coast Series.

Days ago i found this picture. I was completely mesmerised since the first minute i saw it for the resonance with the work i have been doing in scandinavia. I had a better look at the work from new york based photographer Susanna Ray which gladly has nothing to do with mine, quite different actually. Still, i thought it was a great picture to start my photography blog...
